Angling for Salmon in Gros Morne

Park Waters Closed to all Fishing

The following waters within Gros Morne National Park are closed to all fishing:

• All waters of the Western Brook drainage basin, including Western Brook, Western Brook Pond and Stag Brook
• Trout River Pond, Trout River and all tributary streams 
• Ten Mile Feeder
• Deer Arm Pond within 90 meters of the out flow of Ten Mile feeder
• 100 meters upstream and downstream from any fish counting fence 

Angling for Trout and Char in Gros Morne

• A Gros Morne National Park Fishing Permit is required to fish trout or char unless you are under the age of 16 and accompanied by a person 16 years of age or older who has a Gros Morne National park fishing permit.
• Anglers 18 years and older must also have a valid park entry pass.
• Season is from February 1st to April 15th and from May 15th to September 7th
• Daily catch limit is 12 fish or 2.2 kg (5 lb) + 1 fish, whichever limit is reached first
• Possession limit is 24 fish or 4.4 kg (10 lb) plus one fish, whichever limit is reached first
• Non-residents are not required to have a guide to fish anywhere in the Park.

Angling for Atlantic Salmon In Gros Morne

• Season is from June 15th to September 7th. Please note that the season in the national park starts two weeks later than the provincial season which opens on June 1.
• Salmon angling will only be permitted on the following waters: Lomond River from the park boundary to high tide marks at Bonne Bay, East Branch Lomond River, and Deer Arm Brook (Eastern Arm Brook) from Deer Arm Pond to the high tide marks at Bonne Bay.
• The catch and possession limit for Atlantic salmon is 2 salmon.
• Anglers will be issued 1 white and 1 yellow tag. The white tag may be used on Deer Arm Brook and Lomond River, the yellow tag on Lomond River only. A retained salmon must have both a valid national park salmon tag and a valid provincial salmon tag affixed through the gill cavity and mouth of the salmon and be securely locked.
• To fish for Atlantic salmon you must have a Gros Morne National Park salmon license with at least one unused national park tag and a provincial salmon license with at least one unused valid provincial salmon tag.
• Salmon can only be angled with an artificial fly.
• Catch and release of salmon is prohibited with the following exceptions: where a salmon is greater than 63 cm; where a salmon is less than 30 cm; and where a salmon is caught in waters not open to salmon angling. In these instances, the salmon must be released immediately.
• Non-residents are not required to have a guide to fish anywhere in the Park.

While fishing in Gros Morne you cannot:

• Fish between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise
• Fish from bridges
• Put any meat, bones, dead fish or offal, grain, dry feed or other food for fish in park waters
• Use or be in possession of lead sinkers less than 50g
• Use more than one fishing line or leave line unattended
• Use more than one hook or lure
• Use a fishing line having more than one artificial fly or having live or dead natural bait attached to the fly
• Use or be in possession of live fish eggs or live minnows for bait

Obtaining fishing licenses, permits and park passes

 As of June 15, in-person purchase of entry passes, and pick-up of trout fishing permits and salmon angling licenses, will be available at the Parks Canada Entrance Kiosk in Wiltondale, Discovery Centre in Woody Point, Visitor Centre in Rocky Harbour, Parks Canada Campgrounds and at various local businesses.
