The noted constitutional lawyer and polemicist J.S. Ewart was born and educated in Toronto. While practicing in Winnipeg (1882-1904) he founded the Manitoba Law Journal (1884) and served as a member of the defence team on Louis Riel's appeal. He acted as counsel to the Roman Catholic Manitoba in the 1890s. In 1904 he moved to Ottawa, where he specialized in cases before the Supreme Court and Privy Council. Ewart was equally famous as an early and ardent advocate of Canadian autonomy in domestic and foreign affairs.
