Nahanni National Park Reserve
Safety is Parks Canada’s number one priority. Every year, wildfires occur throughout the Dehcho region of the Northwest Territories.
Wildfires and other natural hazards are a part of the national park experience. Through our national fire management program, we are committed to reducing the risk of wildfire and its impacts as well as restoring forest health and biodiversity. You can reduce the impact of an unfortunate circumstances by being prepared for an emergency situation and informed of the wildfire status.
How to safely enjoy a campfire in Nahanni National Park Reserve
Fire boxes are mandatory in Nahanni National Park Reserve; you can safely enjoy a campfire by following these guidelines:
- Keep campfires small, and only in designated fire pits or boxes. Fires must be attended to at all times.
- Completely extinguish campfires with water. Soak it, stir it, and soak it again until it is cool to the touch before leaving it.
- Ashes and scared logs can be dumped in moving water before packing up fire box.
- Do not throw cigarettes on the ground. Put them out and pack out with garbage.
Report any wildfire, illegal campfires or suspicious smoke to the Nahanni Duty Officer at 867-695-6572.

Smoke forecast
To help Canadians be better prepared, wildfire smoke forecast maps are available through the Government of Canada’s smoke forecasting system, FireWork. Wildfire smoke forecasts are also available from FireSmoke Canada.
