Winter

Ski touring in Rogers Pass

If you plan to tour in Glacier National Park, be aware that many areas have restricted and prohibited access in winter. Explosive artillery fire is regularly used on mountain slopes to protect highway and railway traffic from natural avalanches. The Winter Permit System separates skiers from artillery fire and the resulting avalanches.

Avalanche control program

Each winter, Parks Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces work together to release avalanches in a controlled manner before they become a threat to the transportation corridor
