Georges Island visitor experience

Parks Canada will begin providing visitor experiences on Georges Island National Historic Site in 2020. The specific details of this visitor experience (such as transportation, frequency, or fees) have yet to be determined. Stories will be shared in a way that respects and reflects the diverse groups that are connected with Georges Island, including the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia, and key partners such as Acadian community representatives.

Details of the funding announcement:

On Friday, August 9, 2019, there was an investment in Georges Island National Historic Site announced in the amount of $1.6 million from Parks Canada, combined with funding of $2.07 million, from Infrastructure Canada and provincial partners (Develop Nova Scotia and Tourism Nova Scotia), for a total investment of $3.7 million.

This funding will support infrastructure improvements in two parts:

Wharf

  • Develop Nova Scotia will lead the wharf redevelopment project which will provide safe and more compatible access to the island.

On-island

  • Parks Canada will lead the development on Georges Island which will consider interpretive elements, visitor programming, and amenities such as picnic tables and benches that will support visitor experiences.

Future of Georges Island visitor experience:

Longer-term plans for the island will require analysis of this initial phase which will provide important information that Parks Canada will use to assess possible visitor experience models.
