Banff National Park

WHAT: Pursuant to Section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, of the Canada National Parks Act, the following activity is restricted or prohibited by order of the Superintendent:

ALL OFF-TRAIL BICYCLING and ALL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH BUILDING AND MAINTAINING TRAILS BY UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS and TRAIL BICYCLING


(With the exception of the following trails)

Where:
1. Sundance: The paved trail from the Cave and Basin National Historical Site to the Sundance Canyon Trailhead; including the unpaved Marsh Loop.

2. Healy Creek: From Sundance Trail junction to the Brewster Creek Trailhead at the bottom Sunshine Village Road.

3. Spray River West and East: From Spray River East trailhead (Golf Course Road) to Spray River Bridge. From Spray River Bridge to Spray River West trailhead.

4. Cascade Ponds - Bankhead: From the parking area and the Legacy Trail access, around the ponds. Trail from Cascade Ponds to Lower Bankhead.

5. Tunnel Campground Loop: Loop around Tunnel Mountain Campground.

6. Brewster Creek: From the junction of Healy Creek Trail and Brewster Creek Trail to Sundance Lodge.

7. Spray River and Goat Creek: From Spray River Bridge to Spray River West trailhead.

8. Cascade: Upper Bankhead parking area trailhead to Stoney Creek Campground.

9. Lower Stoney: From Mount Norquay Ski area to the Trans Canada Highway.

10. Redearth: Redearth Creek parking area trailhead to the Redearth Warden Cabin. Redearth Warden Cabin to Shadow Lake Lodge effective December 15 until March 15.

11. Surprise Corner to Hoodoos: From Hoodoos Parking Area to Surprise Corner Parking Area. Trailhead can be either location (4.3 km one way). No bikes permitted on the Hoodoos Interpretive Trails (see maps B and C).

12. Water Tower: The Water Tower trail from Cascade Ponds Day-use Area to Johnson Lake Day-use Area. Trailhead can be either location.

13. Tunnel Bench Loop: Loop starting from Hoodoos Lookout Parking Area or Tunnel Mountain Campground.

14. Tunnel Technical Trails: Loop starting from Tunnel Mountain Drive near reservoir.

15. Rundle Riverside: From Golf Course Road to the east park boundary. Trail becomes the Banff Trail at the Canmore Nordic Centre.

16. Lake Minnewanka: Minnewanka Lake Day-use Area to east park boundary at Devil’s Gap. NOTE: this trail is subject to an annual seasonal closure, specific to cyclists effective from July 10 until September 15.

17. Upper Stoney Loop: Loop starting at Immediate right at Mt Norquay Ski Hill Parking Lot.

18. The Toe: Loop and network of single track extensions starting from Hoodoos Parking Area or Tunnel Mountain Campground.

19. Legacy Trail: Paved trail that parallels the Trans Canada Highway from Banff East Gate, through Banff Townsite, to the east end of the Bow Valley Parkway.

20. Sulphur Backside Trail: From Sundance Trail junction to the junction of the Sanson’s Peak Trail. NOTE: No Bikes permitted on the boardwalks. Not listed in trail brochure.

21. Fenland Trail: Loop starting at the west end of Banff townsite. NOTE: Not listed in trail brochure.

22. Middle Springs/ Valleyview/ Rimrock/Banff Springs Trails: Maintained trail system within the area between the Spray Trailhead to the east, the Rimrock Hotel to the south west and the Middle Springs residential area to the west (see map C). NOTE: Not listed in trail brochure.

LAKE LOUISE AREA
1. Great Divide: (Old 1A Hwy) From the parking lot at 3.6 km mark of Lake Louise Drive to the Lake O’Hara Road/Trans Canada Highway in Yoho National Park.

2. Bow River Loop: Loop from the Lake Louise campground or Bow River Bridge opposite of historic Lake Louise train station (Station Restaurant).

3. Tramline: From opposite of the Lake Louise train station to the main parking lot at Upper Lake Louise.

4. Pipestone Trailhead: From the Pipestone trailhead off Slate Road just west of the Hamlet of Lake Louise, along the designated bike trail to the turnaround point at 7.2 km, including branch trail to Mud Lake.

5. Ross Lake: From behind the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise staff residences to the Great Divide (old 1A Hwy) in Yoho National Park.

6. Moraine Lake Highline: From a small parking area 2.5 km up Moraine Lake Rd to the Moraine Lake day use area. This trail is subject to seasonal closures in late summer.

7. Temple Access Road: From the Fish Creek parking lot to Temple Lodge. NOTE: Not listed in trail brochure.

8. Alexandra River: From a small unmarked pull-off, west side of the Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93N) 26 km north of Hwy 11 junction to Castleguard River. NOTE: This unmaintained trail is not listed in the trail brochure.

PENALTY: Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act: maximum penalty $25 000.
