High water delays Nahanni National Park Reserve opening
Issued: June 19, 2020
Nahanni Butte, NT. – Several days of significant rainfall and snowmelt in the headwaters of the South Nahanni and Liard Rivers have caused rivers to rise quickly in the past 48hrs. Due to the significant rise in river levels and the hazard due to floating debris in the water, Parks Canada is delaying the planned resumption of visitor services at Nahanni National Park Reserve, including flightseeing tours to Nailicho (Virginia Falls) until further notice. Staff had been working towards day use operations on June 19/2020, with a resumption in camping opportunities in Nahanni to follow on July 1/2020.
The community of Nahanni Butte, located along the South Nahanni River outside of the Park Reserve has been placed on evacuation standby. The community includes a Parks Canada operations office with a small team of staff. Should an evacuation become necessary, Parks Canada staff will provide assistance to the community where possible and plan to relocate to Fort Simpson, NT temporarily.
Due to significant hazards posed by floating debris and high water levels, boating on the South Nahanni River in Nahanni National Park reserve is not advised.
Once the danger subsides and river levels are safe to operate, updated information concerning Nahanni’s resumption plan will be posted as soon as possible. Those with travel plans and reservations for trips into the park should contact their flight charter operators for more information or email the Parks Canada office in Fort Simpson.
