Improving the forest's health

La Mauricie National Park

Before 1970, the huge park’s forest was altered by a century of logging and wildfire suppression policy. In the absence of regular fires, vegetation has changed, weaken and tends to age. White pine and red oak have been particularly affected by human activity.

To improve the forest’s health, Parks Canada specialists use a natural and essential element of forest ecosystem balance: fire. For a long time, fire was perceived negatively. With a better understanding of fire’s role through studies and experiments, Parks Canada acknowledge the importance of reintroducing fire and its benefits to our landscapes.
