Rouge National Urban Park contains large tracts of fertile Class 1 farmland and is the first federal protected area in Canada to protect agriculture as well as nature and cultural heritage.

History of Farming

The first pioneer farmers arrived here in 1799. Over the next century, farming became an important part of life in the Rouge Valley.

Modern Farming

Starting in the mid-1900s, urban development transformed agriculture in the Rouge. Thanks to the protections afforded by Rouge National Urban Park, farms continue to thrive here today.
