Wood Buffalo National Park and Spring Floods
Fort Smith, NT. May 1/2020- Ice jams can occur annually on the rivers of Wood Buffalo National Park. These are natural processes that can cause safety concerns for people, property and infrastructure.
- Parks Canada has activated a webcam at Peace Point, AB in collaboration with Mikisew Cree First Nations, for people to view for up to date ice conditions on the Peace River. The link for that information is here: https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/nt/woodbuffalo/decouvrir-discover/science_nature/river_levels
- Parks Canada works closely with a variety of Indigenous, provincial and federal government agencies to monitor breakup floods and ice jams and to respond to public safety incidents if required.
- When heading out on the land, leave behind a complete trip plan with friends and family. Make sure whoever holds the trip plan knows who to call in the event that your group doesn’t return on time. (WBNP duty officer: 867-872-0404 or Parks Canada dispatch: 780-852-3100).
