ICE FISHING SEASON OPEN IN GROS MORNE NATIONAL PARK

Issued: February 08, 2021

Ends: April 16, 2021

Parks Canada would like to advise area residents and park visitors that the ice fishing season has opened in Gros Morne National Park. Angling for trout and char is permitted between February 1st to April 15th.

Parks Canada would like to remind residents and visitors to be prepared for variable weather and to take precautions before going out onto ice covered ponds or rivers as mild temperatures have created unusual and potentially dangerous ice conditions. Anglers are advised to check the thickness and quality of ice prior to fishing, as it may be unusually thin compared to other years. Avoid travelling over ice after dark, avoid going out alone, and leave a trip plan with a friend or family member. Anglers are also encouraged to wear a flotation device, cold protection suit, and carry self -rescue equipment. Additional ice safety tips can be found on the websites of the Canadian RedCross and AdventureSmart.

All anglers must have a valid park entry pass, and a Gros Morne National Park fishing permit to fish trout or char. Anglers are reminded that:

  • Trout fishing is prohibited on park waters open to salmon fishing.
  • Daily catch limit is 12 fish or 2.2 kg (5 lb) + 1 fish, whichever limit is reached first.
  • Possession limit is 24 fish or 4.4 kg (10 lb) plus one fish, whichever limit is reached first.
  • Non-residents are not required to have a guide to fish in the Park.
  • Those under the age of 16 are not required to have a fishing permit, as long as they are accompanied by a person 16 years of age or older with a Gros Morne National Park fishing permit.

Park passes and fishing permits can be picked up from the Administration Building in Rocky Harbour during regular business hours. Passes and permits can also be picked up from the following locations:

  • Town offices in Trout River, Woody Point, Glenburnie-Birchy Head-Shoal Brook, St. Paul’s, and Cow Head, Monday to Friday during regular business hours.
  • A number of area businesses carry park passes and permits. The full list of locations is available at: www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/nl/grosmorne/visit/pass

Parks Canada reminds residents and visitors that anyone travelling in Gros Morne National Park is responsible for their own safety. All users are reminded that the COVID-19 global pandemic is still ongoing and circumstances could change quickly. Anyone participating in recreational activities should take care to avoid injury and/or getting lost to help minimize the demands placed on search and rescue teams and on the health care system.
