Indigenous culture

There are many Coast Salish First Nations who have long and continuous ties to the Gulf Islands. The Coast Salish people have special ties to the environment—a spiritual connection to the land, the earth and the water.

History

The cultural heritage of the Gulf Islands ranges through the on-going relationship of the Coast Salish First Nations to these islands and the sea, to European exploration and settlement, and now to the more recent decades of migration to the islands by those seeking a more relaxed and simple lifestyle.
