Waterton Lakes National Park - FIRE BAN

Pursuant to section 3(1)(c) of the National Parks of Canada Fire Protection Regulations, the starting and/ or maintaining of fires within Waterton Lakes National Park of Canada is hereby PROHIBITED by order of the Superintendent, Waterton Lakes National Park of Canada.

This fire ban includes ALL open fires, EXCEPT, provided they are under direct supervision and certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSAGroup) or Underwriters Laboratories (UL):

• portable propane fire pits

• gas or propane stoves and barbeques designed for cooking or heating

• propane or gas fuelled lanterns (enclosed flame)

• patio heaters (propane, catalytic or infrared/radiant). 

WHERE: This fire ban covers the entire national park including all front and backcountry campgrounds and day use areas in Waterton Lakes National Park.

WHY: For the prevention of wildfire during elevated Fire Danger conditions in Waterton Lakes National Park.

PENALTY: It is an offence under the Canada National Parks Act to contravene these prohibitions. Failure to comply may result in the immediate cancellation of the camping permit, eviction from the campground and violators may be charged.

Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act: maximum penalty $25,000.
