The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 North) joins the hamlet of Lake Louise in Banff National Park with the Town of Jasper in Jasper National Park. Give yourself a full day to travel one-way. It is one of the most scenic highways in the world.

Icefields Parkway Driving Guide

The Icefields Parkway parallels the Continental Divide through some of the most wild and remote portions of Banff and Jasper national parks. It is a veritable feast of glaciated peaks, turquoise lakes, waterfalls and the spectacular Athabasca Glacier - part of the Columbia Icefield.

Winding 232 glorious kilometres through the heart of Jasper and Banff national parks, the Icefields Parkway has been called one of the world’s most scenic drives. Around every corner, the route offers fresh wonders – from waterfalls, pristine lakes and broad sweeping valleys to ancient glaciers flowing down from the rugged mountains. Take your time to experience the many scenic stops, picnic spots and hiking trails along the way.


Winter on the Icefields Parkway

Cell Coverage: There is no cell coverage on the Icefields Parkway.

Services (June-September only): one gas station, hotels, campgrounds, gifts and souvenirs, dry toilets, year-round wilderness hostels

Roads and Weather: From October through May there is no road maintenance from 3:30 pm to 7:00 am and no gasoline. Winter tires are required and the road may close without warning. Snow is infrequent but not unusual during the summer. Overnight temperatures near freezing are common year-round. Check the road report (511 Alberta) and weather forecast before departing. 

Wildlife: If you stop to observe wildlife pull well out of the driving lane onto the shoulder and stay inside your vehicle. Please give large animals 30 m (100 feet) or three bus lengths, and bears 100 m (325 feet) or ten bus lengths

Overweight Vehicles: 

  • All recreational vehicles and buses are permitted on the Icefields Parkway. 
  • All other vehicles, including commercial vehicles and U-Hauls, must weigh less than 4550 kg (10,031 lbs) fully loaded. Check the TARE (empty weight) on your vehicle registration for guidance. 
  • Overweight commercial vehicles (greater than 4550 kg / 10,031 lbs) servicing businesses on the Icefields Parkway may obtain a permit in advance. Contact Realty Services for more information. 
  • All other overweight vehicles, including commercial moving trucks and transport trucks, are prohibited. Thank you for your patience and cooperation!
