Sir Wilfrid Laurier National Historic Site

Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919) was born in Saint-Lin, a modest town north of Montreal in the Lanaudiere region. The man who eventually became Canada's seventh Prime Minister led a fascinating political career.

History

Elected leader of the government in 1896, he took advantage of favourable economic conditions to consolidate the young Confederation. By laying the basis for greater autonomy in international relationships and by encouraging immigration and the development of Western Canada, he guided his country forward into a new era, politically, economically and socially.
