2 kayaks on Lachine canal with a sweet view of Montreal.

Practice kayaking five minutes from downtown Montréal? Absolutely! The Lachine Canal offers a full range of activities for watersport enthusiasts.

The calm waters of the canal are perfect for meandering in a kayak, canoe, paddleboat or electric boat - an on-site rental office offers many choices.

The forerunner to the Saint Lawrence Seaway, the Lachine Canal is a coveted tourism and recreational corridor. Urban explorers, history lovers and watersport enthusiasts will appreciate the diversity of the landscapes and the tranquil beauty of this navigable waterway. Caution: lock on the horizon!

Non-motorized boat owners can obtain a sticker to access canal waters at locks No. 3, 4, and 5 at a cost of $5 (does not include the costs of locking).

For your safety

Your boat must be in compliance with Transport Canada’s requirements, and be equipped with all the mandatory safety equipment.

For health and safety reasons, “primary contact” activities, such as SUP or paddle boarding, surfing, sailboarding, and underwater diving, are prohibited.

Refer to the Safe Boating Guide to learn more about boat safety.
