History

Constructed: 1908-1912
Located directly below Canada’s busiest highway, this lock was also built by the firm Larkin & Sangster and in conjunction with the Sydney Power Plant. Waterway control dams also created the potential for generating hydroelectricity. The Government of the day favoured private enterprise and awarded a lease to the Sydney Power Company which was later acquired by Ontario Hydro.
