Peterborough, Ontario, June 13, 2018 – The Brighton Road Swing Bridge, located along the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site, remains closed to vehicle traffic to facilitate the replacement of the existing swing bridge with a new, two-lane swing bridge that will meet current standards, offering full highway loading capacity and a pedestrian sidewalk.

The project was originally scheduled to re-open in June, but has been delayed due to complications with the fabrication of some mechanical components and completion of hydraulics, as well as unanticipated soil conditions. Contractors estimate the bridge will open for vehicle traffic at the end of July.

Public and visitor safety is of the utmost importance to Parks Canada, as is ensuring the sustainability of and long-term use of this key community connector.

Until the bridge is fully operational, it remains in the open position to allow boats to safely pass through. Please keep in mind the following changes to service at the Brighton Road Swing Bridge, which have been implemented for visitor safety:

May to early August 2018

  • Mooring is not available at the site;

  • The lock grounds and washroom facilities are closed to the public; and,

  • The canal paths are closed at this location.
The replacement of the Brighton Road Swing Bridge is part of Parks Canada’s unprecedented $3 billion investment over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway, and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada. These historic investments will mitigate health and safety risks, halt the loss of nationally significant built heritage, and stimulate the economy in communities across the country.
