December 19, 2018 - Community Update: Peterborough Earth Dams

Earth embankment dams across the Trent-Severn Waterway have been identified for rehabilitation or upgrades that may include repairs to washouts, removal of vegetation undermining their strength, and height increases.

What You Need To Know

The major repairs to the Earth dams throughout Peterborough began in November 2015 and are estimated to continue until Spring 2019.

Public safety is a priority for Parks Canada. As such, this work is being done to rehabilitate and strengthen earth dams in the Peterborough area. Earth dams are vital for flood mitigation and therefore the safety of visitors, residents, and property.

In order to rehabilitate and strengthen these dams, washouts will be repaired, dam height will be increased where necessary, and vegetation will be removed. During phase one of the project, trees and shrubs growing along earth dams, which threaten the dam’s long-term integrity by creating places for seepage and erosion, were removed.

Work includes the East and West dams at Curtis Creek, Hurdons Dam and Thompson's Bay Dam, all in the City of Peterborough.

Parks Canada has been recognized on the world stage as a leader in conservation. Care has been taken to consider and implement measures that will mitigate potential negative environmental impact on waterways, nesting areas, and other habitats. Resources have also been made available for planting trees at more suitable locations, as well as planting beneficial plants like milkweed and tall grasses at the dam sites.

Furthermore, as part of these projects, Parks Canada will be improving the trails at these sites and will be working with the City of Peterborough to incorporate these trails into the municipal network.

Notices will be posted in advance of work where trails will be temporarily closed.
