Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site

Parks Canada wishes to remind users to be cautious at all times when using the grounds and trails at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal in the winter, as the snow-covered surfaces can be slippery. Grounds and trails are maintained from May through October.

The use of footwear adapted to winter conditions can help to reduce the risk of falling. Hold railings when crossing lock gates and keep at a safe distance from the canal walls to avoid slipping.

We strongly discourage visitors from walking on any ice-covered streams, ponds and other bodies of water in and around the site as ice conditions can be very unpredictable.
