Birds

Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site

Several species of ducks can be found around Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site. Male mallards are easily identifiable by their iridescent green heads and yellow bill, while female mallards have more subdued tan and brown feathers and an orange-brown bill. Mallards feed by tipping forwards in the water to eat aquatic plants and insects.

Great blue herons can be seen around Whitefish Island. They are large birds with long legs and necks and they feed on fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and insects. The great blue heron has blue-gray feathers with a black stripe over the eye.

Bird watching is fun and rewarding for visitors, but respect for wildlife is crucial. Carry a spotting scope or binoculars, which will let you have a close look at the birds, without disturbing them.
