Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site
Commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal with us!
Travel into history at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site during its 125th Anniversary. The site has a long, rich, and varied history beginning with Indigenous stories of fishing and trading on the shores of the St. Marys River Rapids. The canal opened in 1895, impacting Great Lakes shipping and influencing the development of a nation.
Parks Canada, in collaboration with Batchewana First Nation, the Métis Nation of Ontario, the City of Sault Ste. Marie, and Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, is proud to bring Canadians a season-long commemoration in 2020 highlighting the fascinating history of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal.
