Rehabilitation of the Junior Commissariat Officer’s Quarters
Issued: May 20, 2021
Ends: December 31, 2021
Butler’s Barracks National Historic Site
Parks Canada would like to inform the public that infrastructure work to restore the Junior Commissariat Officer’s Quarters is now underway at Butler’s Barracks National Historic Site. This structure has witnessed over 200 years of military and community history, and was one of the first buildings constructed as part of the Butler’s Barracks military complex just after the War of 1812.
Though renovations to the structure will be substantial, the preservation of historic materials was an important consideration for the project. Restoration work will be sympathetic to the original building materials and techniques, and as much historic fabric as possible will be retained or reinforced throughout the following work:
- stabilization and repointing of the chimneys;
- reconstruction and “sistering” of some of the walls of the kitchen;
- construction of a new floor and foundation in the kitchen;
- replacement of the roofing system;
- replacement of siding, windows, and shutters;
- replacement of the porch;
- improvements to drainage around the exterior of the building; and,
- installation and upgrading of utilities.
These historic federal infrastructure investments will mitigate health and safety risks, reduce the loss of nationally significant built heritage and stimulate the economy in communities across the country.
Public safety is of the utmost importance to Parks Canada. During construction, visitors and the local community are asked to respect all on-site signage, keep a safe distance from construction crews and onsite equipment, and be aware of some minor disturbances, including construction noise and temporary closures of certain areas.
Please note:
- Parks Canada is following advice from public health experts and implementing measures to support Canada’s efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the risks to Canadians, visitors, Parks Canada team members, and contractors working at our places.
