What is a management plan?
A management plan is a key instrument for ensuring that Parks Canada delivers on its commitments to the people of Canada.
The process of management planning allows Indigenous communities, stakeholders, partners, local residents, and the public to have an effective voice in shaping the future of the site.
2020 Management Plan for the Halifax Defence Complex
The Halifax Defence Complex consists of five national historic sites of Canada, on or near the shores of Halifax Harbour in Nova Scotia: Halifax Citadel, Georges Island, Fort McNab, Prince of Wales Tower and York Redoubt.
This management plan outlines an updated vision for the Halifax Defence Complex, and presents key strategies and objectives aimed at achieving the vision. As such, this management plan provides strategic guidance for the management of the Halifax Defence Complex and provides accountability to Canadians for the sites’ management.

Management plans are reviewed every ten years. This plan was developed in consultation with the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia and with the input and participation of site partners, key stakeholders, and the Canadian public.
In addition to in-person sessions, Parks Canada offered an online option, which included a survey, for people to share their thoughts. This video shows how we extended the invitation to the “Let’s Talk Parks Canada Halifax!” website.
