What is a management plan?

Management plans are the central documents that guide Parks Canada in the protection, management, and operation of its national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas. Reviewed every ten years, management plans are required by legislation, guided by public consultation, approved by the Minister responsible for Parks Canada and tabled in Parliament.

Parks Canada has begun the management planning process for the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.

Management plans are developed through consultation and input from various people and organizations, including Indigenous peoples, local and regional residents, visitors, and the public.

As a strategic and long-term guide, a management plan establishes a vision looking ten or more years into the future. Its primary goal is to ensure that there is a clearly defined direction for the maintenance or restoration of ecological integrity and is intended to guide appropriate use. Direction is also described for visitor experience programs, which are recognized as a fundamental means for achieving both protection and use objectives.

Parks Canada is inviting your comments to help us plan for the future of the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. Canadians are being asked to share their thoughts as we seek input for the strategic planning of the national historic site over the next 15-20 years.
