This trail links the Visitor Centre to the summit of Signal Hill at the Duke of York Battery near Cabot tower. The lower end of the trail is a hub from which visitors can go to the Visitor Centre, or link to Gibbet Hill or Burma Road trails. Surrounding the summit parking lot is the "Lookout" where interpretive panels present a wealth of Signal Hill's military and communications history. Here, hikers can visit Cabot Tower, or link to the North Head or Ladies' Lookout trails.

At a plateau halfway to the summit, the trail skirts the edge of a drop to the Narrows and provides a breathtaking view of St. John's Harbour, the Harbour entrance and the Southside Hill where several batteries from Fort Amherst at the outer end to the "Castle" at the inner end of the channel, protected against attack by hostile ships.

Along the trail you will pass the Queen's Battery and barracks which were the keystone of the Harbour defenses during the 19th century.
