The Historic Sites and Monument Board of Canada recommended the designation of the Cave and Basin as a national historic site in 1981, citing its significance as the birthplace of Canada’s national parks. The historic site encompasses the Cave, the interior pool and original vent hole, the Basin, the thermal springs, the remains of a hotel, the Bathing Pavilion and the Caretaker’s Cottage.
