Ranching-focused school programs are delivered by Parks Canada interpreters in 30-minute segments. Programs are comprised of hands-on activities, demonstrations, interactive talks, sensory experiences and environmental hikes.

Bar U Ranch school programming demonstrates a broad range of educational themes integrating historical, cultural, social, political, environmental and economic themes.

Core program

Belly of the Bar U

Experience the variety of methods practiced to maintain self-sufficiency. Featured is the cookhouse, garden, root cellar and storage sheds.

Take-a-hike

A creek-side trek where students learn about land management practices that help sustain an important ecosystem.

Round-up camp

Through storytelling, students learn how cowboys lived and worked on the range.

Program dates: May 13 to September 30, 2019

Class size: Maximum 60

Program times: Morning (10 am to 12 pm) or afternoon (12:30 pm tp 2:30 pm)

Lunch facilities: Outdoor picnic areas and shelters are available for lunch. The Bar U Cafe is open from 10 am to 5 pm and is a great place for adults to purchase coffee or food.

Horse-drawn wagon Book our wagon pulled by the Percheron horses that made the Bar U Ranch famous. The wagon holds a maximum of 15 passengers. Teachers are responsible for breaking students into groups and communicating to the driver a preferred length for each ride. 12:30 pm to 2 pm $171.70
Self-guided visit Explore the many ranch buildings, grounds and exhibits that are brought to life by our costumed interpreters. Your students can work through a variety of activities as they explore the ranch with our Xplorer’s Booklets. 10 am to 5 pm Free

Fees

Beginning January 1, 2018, school program fees will be:

  • Youth: $7.30
  • Adult chaperones, teachers and assistants: free
  • Enhanced horse-drawn Wagon program: $171.70

Payment

Payment may be made on arrival, in cash, debit or credit card, or by cheque payable to the Receiver General of Canada.
