The following themes constitute messages of historic interest in relation to the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal: the Vaudreuil lock, the route of the voyageurs, and the fur trade in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The private monopoly represented by the Vaudreuil lock sparked protests that were a major incentive for building the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal. As the first stop after Lachine, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue was considered the starting point for voyageurs travelling up the Ottawa River to engage in the fur trade.
