Two gems, open for business

Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area

By Svenja Hansen and Marlene McBrien

Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) will be open for business seven days a week (10am to 5pm), from July 1st to Thanksgiving, with two great locations: Visitor Information/ Administration building located in downtown Nipigon, and Visitor Centre at the Terrace Bay Beach Pavilion. Friendly and knowledgeable Parks Canada staff will be available to provide reception, orientation, and daily interpretation programming. Both locations also have fully stocked gift shops.

Visitors travelling the Trans-Canada Highway are always seeking those hidden gems or experiences that only locals know about. Parks Canada’s visitor reception and information centres at the Terrace Bay waterfront and at 22 Third Street in Nipigon are two such gems. In addition to providing information on nearby hiking trails, red chairs, and special events, Parks Canada staff will offer daily roving programs and guided activities on weekends.

Call:        807-887-5467 – in Nipigon (year round)

807-889-1102 – Terrace Bay (June to October)

Roving programs are casual and spontaneous: 5 to 20 minute personalised interpretive sessions occurring along the boardwalk or beach in Terrace Bay and the Bridgeview Lookout Tower in Nipigon. Subjects vary from fur-bearing animals to micro-plastic pollution to invasive species to Lake Superior lighthouses. Look for an interpreter standing near a Parks Canada wind flag and simply join the conversation.

On weekends from Friday afternoon to Sunday, Parks Canada staff will deliver guided activities. Group bookings and French programming are also available by appointment.

Check out the fully stocked gift shop in the Terrace Bay Visitor Centre to find the perfect souvenir of a visit to Lake Superior’s north shore. This location has a wider variety of merchandise and will be selling refreshments for those warm summer days.
