About the winter permit system
In Rogers Pass, Parks Canada and the Canadian Forces operate the world’s largest mobile avalanche control program to keep the Trans-Canada Highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway open. The Winter Permit System protects backcountry users from the danger of direct artillery fire and the resulting avalanches.
A valid Winter Permit is required for all winter backcountry access in Glacier National Park, including both Winter Restricted Areas and Winter Unrestricted Areas. The Winter Permit System allows visitors to enter Winter Restricted Areas when avalanche control artillery gunfire is not planned. Permit holders can only enter Winter Restricted Areas on days when the area is posted as open, when there is no chance of artillery fire happening in the area.
Plan ahead and apply for your Annual Winter Permit online. Daily winter permits are also available at Summit Station at the summit of Rogers Pass.
