Why permits are required
Research and collection permits authorize activities that are otherwise prohibited within locations administered by Parks Canada. Permitted research and collection activities are authorized for the purposes of improving our collective knowledge and understanding of Canada's natural and cultural heritage.
When permits are required
Archaeology, natural and social science
Permits are required for all archaeological, natural and social science research and collection activities in locations administered by Parks Canada.
Historical research
Research and collection permits do not apply to historical research conducted in locations administered by Parks Canada.
To conduct historical research, you must contact the research coordinator responsible for the location where you want to do the research.
Where permits are required
Research and collection permits apply to all locations administered by Parks Canada, including:
- national historic sites of Canada administered by Parks Canada (including historic canals)
- national parks of Canada and national park reserves of Canada
- national marine conservation areas of Canada and national marine conservation area reserves of Canada (including Saguenay -St. Lawrence Marine Park)
- national urban parks
- other federal lands administered by Parks Canada (including Pingo Canadian Landmark, and submerged lands)
