Near this site, during the Seven Years’ War, Canadian militia and French soldiers under the command of the Marquis de Montcalm, alongside First Nations warriors, repulsed British forces under General James Wolfe. On 31 July 1759, five weeks after the Siege of Québec began, Wolfe attempted a landing on the Beauport shore against French positions. By the time the fighting ended, the attackers had suffered more than 440 dead and wounded and the defenders more than 60. This battle was the greatest French victory during the siege, which nonetheless culminated in the surrender of the city to the British on 18 September 1759.
