During the first wave of Ukrainian immigration to Canada (1896-1914), Genik helped thousands of his compatriots to settle in the western provinces and to develop the area's resources. Shortly after arriving in Winnipeg in 1896, he was named an immigration agent, thereby becoming the first Ukrainian to serve in the federal civil service. For 18 years he provided practical advice and assistance to immigrants as they tried to adapt to life in their new country. Genik's leadership in cultural matters also helped strengthen Canada's Ukrainian community.
