Beginning with the export of masts to France, timber and wooden ships to Great Britain, staves and boards to the West Indies, this industry flourished until the end of the 19th century. In the present century the forests have become the basic resource of the pulp and paper industry, and are also of vital importance to the entire commercial, agricultural and industrial economy of Eastern Canada.
