His vision of archives involved the collection of all forms of documentation, and included service to both the historical profession and the general public. Through his vigorous acquisition policy at home and abroad, and his publication of archival documents, he contributed greatly to the growth of the Archives and of Canadian historiography. He was knighted in 1935.
