Born in Trinidad, Arthur Silver Morton was educated at the Universities of Edinburgh and Berlin. He served for several years as a Presbyterian minister, lectured on church history in Halifax and Toronto, was head of the department of history and chief librarian at the University of Saskatchewan (1914 - 1940) and provincial archivist of Saskatchewan (1938 - 1945). His monumental study of the fur trade, History of the Canadian West to 1870-71, is the most important of his many publications. He was elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1932 and awarded the Tyrrell Medal in 1941.
