Montréal-born James Morrice was one of the best landscape painters of his time. Largely self-taught, he was influenced by his contemporaries, including Whistler and Matisse. Morrice used and transformed surrounding light as a means of communicating atmosphere in his paintings. His work was regularly shown in many cities, including Montréal and Paris, where he lived. Reviewed by leading critics, his paintings have been acquired by major museums.
