LOUIS THOMAS (ca. 1766–1869) Maliseet Chief Louis Thomas was instrumental in settling his people in the Lower St. Lawrence region. In 1826, he and his brother Joseph, on behalf of themselves and 96 others living in the Saint John River Valley, petitioned the authorities of Lower Canada for a parcel of land, to be held in common, in Viger Township. Governor Lord Dalhousie granted their request. Through numerous petitions, Louis Thomas, Grand Chief from 1841, repeatedly expressed his attachment to Viger and defended the interests and rights of the Maliseet.
