In the 1860s and 1870 this Inuit couple from Baffin Island assisted several important arctic exploration expeditions and thus contributed much to our knowledge of the north. Iprivik hunted for game and drove dogsleds while Taqulittuq made arctic clothing and served as interpreter. In 1872-1873 the couple was indispensable to the remarkable survival of a group of American explorers stranded for an entire winter on an icefloe. Their accomplishments were recorded in several books and demonstrated the advantages of the Inuit practice of travelling light in the Arctic and living off the land.
