Born and educated in Montréal, A.P. Low joined the Geological Survey of Canada in 1882. In 1884 he undertook the first scientific survey and mapping of Lake Mistassini, and through the 1890's he explored much of the interior of Ungava and Labrador, noting the important iron deposits of the area. When the Canadian Government decided to assert its sovereignty in the Eastern Arctic, Low was put in command of the first of the Arctic patrols in the NEPTUNE (1903-04). Appointed Director of the Geological Survey in 1906, the next year he developed a lingering illness from which he never recovered.
