On March 3, 1875, Creighton and his athletic club teammates took to the ice at the Victoria Skating Rink, which once stood near here, to play the first indoor public hockey game. Over the next two years he combined the key elements of what would become the modern sport–pucks, sticks, goals, and skates–with standardized rules, and promoted it to the public. Players and fans loved it, and the sport quickly grew in popularity. Creighton, the captain of the first regular hockey club formed in Canada, is often considered the “father” of organized hockey–our national winter sport.
