Fathom Five National Marine Park of Canada

Canada’s First National Marine Park

Fathom Five was established in 1987 as Canada’s first National Marine Conservation Area. The park contains rugged islands, over 22 shipwrecks and a cold freshwater ecosystem, with some of the most pristine water in the Great Lakes. Visitors explore the park by tour boat, hiking trails on the famous Flowerpot Island, kayaking, snorkeling or by plunging beneath the surface for the park’s world-class scuba diving.This is one of the most undisturbed parts of the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve, designated in 1990 by UNESCO.

Making the Most of Your Visit


  • Allow 4 to 5 hours for your visit.
  • The wonders of Fathom Five are revealed at the Parks Canada visitor centre.
  • Visit Flowerpot Island by boat to walk the trails, enjoy a picnic and visit a lighthouse.
  • Take a glass-bottomed boat tour around the islands and view the shipwrecks.
  • Join an interpreter aboard the MS Chi-Cheemaun for a unique tour of the park.

Camping

There are six backcountry tent pads located on Flowerpot Island. Camping permits are required and are available at the visitor centre.

Important Tip

Divers are required to register in person at the park Diver Registration Centre, located in the Parks Canada visitor centre, before diving in the park. Park staff provide important information during registration.
