National Parks and National Historic Sites of Canada in Newfoundland and Labrador

Cape Spear National Historic Site of Canada

Since 1836, Cape Spear lighthouse has guided mariners approaching St. John’s. Historically recognized due to its age and architecture, the lighthouse has been restored to its original appearance and portrays the life of 19th century light keepers and their families. Also found at Cape Spear are the remains of Fort Cape Spear, a Second World War coastal defence battery, silent reminders of the dangers faced by shipping during that conflict.

Getting There

Cape Spear is 11 km southeast of St. John’s on Highway 11.
