Read four captivating stories
The reasons to become a volunteer are most likely as diverse as they are volunteers! In the stories below, four of the 100 volunteers receiving special recognition in September share their passion. Really inspiring.
-
Elder Mrs Edna Helm and her family, volunteers at Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site help Parks Canada staff welcome and monitor visitors along the trail.
-
Norm and Sue Green are more than just volunteers; the duo continues to inspire others to get involved in numerous conservation projects within Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site.
-
Josh Nelles started volunteering at 9 years old in 2003 and has since logged in over 120 volunteer hours on HMCS Haida.
-
Lorne Fuller is a retired farmer who enjoys interacting with visitors and restoring vintage farm equipment at Bar U Ranch National Historic Site.
In Memoriam - Chris Wilke
Chris Wilke volunteered with the resource conservation at Elk Island National Park from 1985 to 2009. Chris passed away suddenly in 2010. He is truly considered a life-long volunteer to the park. During his volunteer years with the park he participated in many of the wildlife conservation programs in the park. His interests were diverse but he did have a passion for the bison and elk management programs that he participated in faithfully for over 20 years. During this time Chris became a part of the Elk Island family and a true ambassador for the park.
