A Superior Vision: A National Marine Conservation Area For A Great Lake

June 2002

Introduction

  • A feasibility study was initiated in 1997 to explore the possibility of a national marine conservation area (NMCA) in Lake Superior.
  • This document is intended to capture the spirit of the extensive views and recommendations brought forward in the feasibility study, to do so in a manner which is simple and straightforward, and to signal Parks Canada's desire to see this vision implemented.
  • Parks Canada is indebted to the Regional Committee and the many people of the north shore who contributed to the discussion on the proposed NMCA and appreciates the role the Review Committee played in moving this initiative forward.
  • The elaboration of this vision in an interim management plan and realization of it requires the ongoing support of local people and an agreement between the federal and provincial governments.
