PEI National Park Wins Camping Poll for Best Canadian National Park
Prince Edward Island National Park has been awarded the About.com Reader’s Choice Camping Award for Best Canadian National Park! This honour was bestowed after a month of online voting between February 19th and March 19th, 2013. PEI National Park came out ahead of four other finalists in the poll: Banff National Park, Alberta; Georgian Bay Islands National Park, Ontario; Kootenay National Park, British Columbia; and Terra Nova National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Canada’s National Park system has garnered a worldwide reputation for excellence in outdoor recreation and PEI National Park provides visitors with unique opportunity to experience some of the best camping in Canada. Situated on the north shore of Prince Edward Island, PEI National Park features spectacular beaches and sand dunes, iconic sandstone cliffs, rich coastal wetlands and scenic forests. The park is also home to an abundance of wildlife including over 300 species of birds such as the endangered Piping Plover.
Visitors to PEI National Park can enjoy swimming, hiking, cycling, bird watching, camping, as well as family friendly outdoor activities. There are many trails to explore including over 20 kilometers of paved scenic multi-use trail following the coastline. Established in 1937, PEI National Park draws over 400,000 visitors each year, mostly in July and August. The tip of The Greenwich peninsula was added to the park in 1998, and welcomes visitors to experience a stunning parabolic dune system, and a rich coastal landscape that has been used by peoples of Mi’kmaq, French, Acadian and British ancestry for 10,000 years.
PEI National Park offers 3 coastal camping options. Cavendish Campground (252 sites) and Stanhope Campground (116 sites), offer a wide variety of sites ranging from unserviced to 3 way service. Both campgrounds are located within 100 meters of the beach and offer both sheltered and ocean view sites. Brackley Group Tenting is available for organized groups. Beautiful nature trails near each campground invite exploration, and interpretive programs and special events provide great opportunities for fun and learning to visitors of all ages.
