Adults: In breeding plumage mainly white with elongated pinkish-buff feathers on crown, back and lower neck. Bill yellow, orange or reddish. Legs greensih yellow to dull reddish. In winter, similar but buffy areas much paler, less extensive, and elongated feathers much shorter. Bill yellow; legs greenish, dark brown or blackish. Immatures: Plunmage all white, the feathers of crown, back and lower neck not elongated.
