Heron, Great Blue
-Ardea herodias Linnaeus
Adults (breeding plumage): head white with a broad black stripe on either side, extending from above the eye to the nape and projecting behind the head in a slender black crest. Neck greyish brown with a double row of black down the fore-neck. Lower neck and back with long slender plumes. Upper parts mainly greyish blue. Under parts variously streaked and armed with black and white. Bill yellowish (to almost orange in breeding period), sometimes with a dusky ridge. Legs brownish green, often with reddish hue in mating season.
