Bill long, forehead sloping. Adult male: Head and neck chestnut, darkening to blackish on crown, base of bill and throat. A broad, sharly defined black area extending completely around forepart of body in front of wings. Back, scapulars and sides white crossed by fine wavy dusky lines. Rump and tail coverts black. Tail blackish. Wing coverts grey, tertials white, all crossed by fine wavy lines; secondaries, excluding speculum grey. Abdomen white, its hind part crossed by wavy fine lines. Eye red. Bill blackish. Legs and feet greyish blue.
